HISTORY OF ISO 45001

The history of ISO 45001, an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, includes the following:

  • Proposal: The ISO 45001 standard was proposed in October 2013. 
  • Committee formation: The ISO/PC 283 committee was formed to create the standard and worked until December 2015. 
  • First draft: The first draft failed to gain approval from 2015 to 2017. 
  • Finalization: The finalized standard was published in March 2018. 
  • Migration period: The transition period from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001 was from 2018 to 2021. However, the transition period was extended to September 11, 2021 for organizations affected by COVID-19.

 

ISO 45001 is based on the conventions and guidelines of the International Labour Organization, national standards, and OHSAS 18001. It focuses on the interaction between the working environment and the organization, and aims to reduce occupational injuries and diseases.

ISO 45001 can be integrated with other ISO management system standards, and applies to organizations of all sizes. It uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology to manage health and safety risks.
